Quick rules of thumb
- For a 40-hour week, hourly × 2,080 = yearly (40 × 52). $25/hour ≈ $52,000/year.
- For a 37.5-hour week, multiply by 1,950.
- Bi-weekly pay gives 26 cheques a year; semi-monthly gives 24. Two months a year you get a third bi-weekly cheque.
Comparing a contract to a salaried job
Contractors usually don’t get paid vacation, holidays, benefits or employer pension contributions. To compare fairly, set paid weeks to about 46–48 for the contract rate and remember you’ll pay both halves of CPP if self-employed.
